Professional Internship

The purpose of the professional internship is to provide the student with an opportunity to work with credentialed professionals and apply knowledge, skills, and abilities from coursework from the major.

Individual settings and agencies have specific guidelines regarding interns and patient interactions. The student is expected to follow the guidelines discussed in their facility orientation.

To ensure compliance with the affiliation agreements with external agencies, the program has established requirements for participation in professional internships. The follow identifies the academic and administrative requirements for professional internships.

The student must be enrolled in the ATHP 4388: Professional Internship course.

All students placements must be approved by the program director. Due to requirements of affiliation agreements with external agencies, the following are required for students wanting to participate in the professional internship:

    • Health and Immunization Packet (includes health history form, immunizations form, and physical examination for completed by a physician, nurse practitioner or physician assistant)
    • Current Health Care Provider CPR and First Aid certifications
    • Completion of HIPAA/FERPA Confidentiality Training
    • Completion of Blood-borne Pathogen, OSHA, and/or Universal Precautions Training
    • Proof of Occupational Exposure "Needle Stick" Insurance
    • Completion of favorable criminal background screening
Note: Some agencies or settings may require a drug screening and/or have additional health requirements prior to participation.

The student must complete the following each semester in which they intend to complete plan to complete professional internship opportunities:

  1. Complete and submit the following to the program director:
    • Field Observation and/or Internship Application
    • Health and Immunization Packet
    • Health care provider CPR and First Aid certifications
    • Proof of Occupational Exposure "Needle Stick" Insurance
    • Completion of favorable criminal background screening (only needs to be submitted once)
  2. Attend and complete the following:
    • HIPAA/FERPA Confidentiality Training
    • Blood-borne Pathogen, OSHA, and/or Universal Precautions Training
    • Professional Internship Orientation session/s
  3. Approval E-mail from Program Director with handbook.

The program requires students to officially document all professional internship clock hours. Document/Form

All hours logs should be submitted to the program director. Deliver to the program director office location (Nursing Building 226) or mail it to Athletic Training and Rehabilitative Science Program Director, Ila Faye Miller School of Nursing and Health Professions, University of the Incarnate Word, 4301 Broadway – CPO 472, San Antonio, Texas 78209.

The student should also maintain a copy for themselves.
