Service Opportunities
Students and faculty are engaged in numerous outreach programs to the underserved in the city. The service initiatives below are examples of the UIW community committing to the Mission of the University of the Incarnate Word.
Alternative Spring Break
Each spring, UIW faculty organize painting initiatives through local community centers.
Cardinals for Kids
Cardinals for Kids, a student run philanthropy hosted/sponsored through University Mission and Ministry, is a unique and exciting tradition dedicated to raising awareness and funds to serve the families of the Children's Hospital of San Antonio.
Center for Refugees Project
Provides opportunities for faculty and students to meet and work with newcomers to San Antonio, enjoy their culture and support them in their efforts to be productive members of U.S. society.
Community Garden
The UIW Community Garden offers the University a local, fresh and vibrant array of seasonal vegetables for all to enjoy in its tending and yield. Students and faculty can volunteer to help out with the garden during garden work days.
Ella Austin Community Garden
UIW volunteers help Ella Austin development staff with their youth garden that is used to teach children how to grow and harvest their own vegetables.
Golden Harvest
The students go out into neighborhoods collecting canned goods for a variety of agencies needing food for the hungry.
Meet the Mission
Organized teams of students go with faculty to sites such as SAMM Ministries, the Food Bank, Travis Park Methodist Church, Salvation Army and Visitation House for homeless and abused women and children.
Word in Action: A Day of Service
UIW volunteers perform coordinated community service throughout San Antonio in celebration of special UIW events.
